Brisbane Valley Rail Trail

The Ride

The dream of cycle touring started whilst i was in University. The thought of being able to travel anywhere on a bicycle at your own pace for very little money was quite appealing as a university student. The idea was freedom at a every weekend. I never tour cycled whilst i was at university, because i never knew where to start. TallManCycles is all about enabling everyone to be able to tour cycle!

This trip was my first tour cycling adventure, and i chose the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail because it had an appealing amount of distance, whilst being mostly off the road away from highways and traffic. I started in Fernvale and cycled 91kms to Moore for the night. Not everyone has to do such a distance, as there are plenty of great camping at nearly every town.

Fernvale -> Lowood -> Coominya -> Esk -> Togoolawah -> Moore.

The ride was quite tough, though i was still relatively fit from completing The Peaks Challenge Falls Creek. The only thing that did get tiresome was opening and closing the gates along the way. Having a heavy bike and trying to open and close gates just didn’t appeal to me very much. There was plenty of water along the way, however make sure you have at least 2.5L of water at each town. It was just coming into winter, but during the day was still very hot!.

Food / Water

I took my 600ml Podium Camelbak bottle + 2L Bottle that i filled up at each town i stopped at.

Lowood had water at the surrounding parks – Ate a cliff bar.

Coominya didn’t have much other than a Water Tap at the old train station – no food. – Ate another cliff bar.

Esk had a shop / restaurants and plenty of water. This was around 50kms into the trip. – Ate a box of dates, some bananas and a bottle of milk.

Togoolawah had a general store which i ate some more fruit and picked up 6 eggs and tinned chilli meat for dinner. (make sure you pack the eggs well).

Moore I slept in the park that allowed camping across from the pub. I was the only one in the campsite that night so camping with a friend is definitely recommended. (I think it is better to camp at Linville which is another 7kms up the road).
